Susan Askey
Artists Bio

Susan Askey was born and raised in southern Colorado. She currently lives with her husband on a ranch southwest of Pueblo. Susan's affinity for the western United States and life in the west has nurtured her respect for the land and it's history. Sacred symbols are seen throughout her work, which reflect respect for the environment, indigenous cultures, and spiritual enlightenment.

Her series work focuses on the roll of women in the southwest, including the turn of the century cowgirl. Susan uses her unique sense of humor to amuse the viewer while focusing on gender specific roles. This work is often satirical and political in theme.

The Navajo Sipapu series of watercolor collages is Susan's latest creation. Each landscape represents an internal and external journey. Through a "spiritual opening" the viewer travels on an enlightened path. The Sipapu theme is also evident in her ceramic sculptures.

Susan believes history is an open door to understanding future generations. "To become enlightened and evolve as a person remains my constant goal."

She has exhibited in a traveling feminist expo in the New England states. Susan has recently shown in Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, Wyoming, and Colorado.

Susan is a member of the southern Colorado watercolor Society, The Pikes Peak water Color society, The National watercolor society, and the Society of Layerists in Multimedia.

Susan earned a double degree in sociology and art with a psychology minor. As an Art Therapist she developed and implemented ocular kinesiology workshops for people of all ages in the mental health field. She has also written and illustrated an art therapy short story.

Artists Statement

art changes the shape of my world...
art allows my boundaries to dissolve, and time to fade into forever - or nothing at all...
art leaves only my soul exposed...
E=mc   is only the beginning... the first baby step...
the most important part of my art is what I do not paint or sculpt...
art can be my savage revenge - my brutal response...
art pounds and shapes and hammers away at my rational inside walls - creating my freedom of thought and expression...
the battle often bloody - but necessary for my existence...
